I usually have 10 - 20 concepts in my back pocket- they balance out my wallet so I don't sit with a crooked spine at work. Most of the concepts are lame but I never throw any away.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDfqDH-RcI/AAAAAAAAAA0/nqeZ3xa3ubY/s400/temp1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035270296886461890" />
I like to use a number 2 pencil, preferably one that a dog has not chewed. I sketch a layout with the correct proportions.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDhLDH-RdI/AAAAAAAAABA/fqvbxE3o_TA/s400/ink1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035271963333772754" />I ink my work with a brush (number 2) and ink. I use a light table and a nice piece of translucent vellum paper. In my older comics I used a sharpie marker, I prefer a brush because I have more control. After inking this frame I decided it was too busy and the "Slug Bug" was lost in the mess, I used tracing paper to rework the design. By the end I had three sheets of tracing paper that I could move around on top of my sketch. I use artist tape so I don't rip the paper.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDhvzH-ReI/AAAAAAAAABM/v7wIxBZyXVM/s400/temp2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035272594693965282" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDh7DH-RfI/AAAAAAAAABU/3lD9ZbIuK0k/s400/temp2.5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035272787967493618" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDiJTH-RgI/AAAAAAAAABc/2i_NT-iDvtY/s400/temp3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035273032780629506" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDmDDH-RkI/AAAAAAAAACQ/Kc4vv9z6JyI/s400/ink2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035277323452958274" />I like to stick a post-it note to the bottom of my hand when I ink because the oil from my hand will resist ink if it gets on the paper.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDmdDH-RlI/AAAAAAAAACY/wNr6KiZgf-w/s400/ink3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035277770129557074" />I draw some components alone to add when I get into Illustrator.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDm5jH-RmI/AAAAAAAAACg/NjYit0iwDmQ/s400/inkf13.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035278259755828834" />I scan the art (300 dpi grayscale) and place it into an Illustrator document. I use "live trace" at the default setting, ungroup the art and delete all the white. I fine tune any messed up lines (the boy's lip, dad's hands and shadow etc.) and drop it into a frame.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDnVTH-RnI/AAAAAAAAACo/CzOnjKm9rZc/s400/ink1cc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035278736497198706" />In Illustrator I make a separate layer under my black line work and draw blocks of color (grays) with a mouse. If the piece is very complex I will use multiple layers for the color. I prefer a mouse over a tablet because I feel I have more control.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDoWTH-RoI/AAAAAAAAADA/8WN4jS73PI0/s400/tempf2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035279853188695682" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDo6TH-RpI/AAAAAAAAADI/3aFsTC1msQs/s400/inkf2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035280471663986322" />I did the type twice because I was not satisfied with the first attempt.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDrBzH-RsI/AAAAAAAAADs/CsUWC7ZRFGs/s400/inkf2cc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035282799536260802" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_doUVucHKOE8/ReDwgjH-RvI/AAAAAAAAAEU/WVLJHLO8u08/s400/tempf3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035288825375377138" />
As you can see, I edited out the copy.
